The Shared Responsibility of Cloud Security

Although the cloud comes with great financial and technical benefits, like any other infrastructure, it also has its share of threats.

Over the years, we have seen a rise in both attack frequency and diversity of malicious software used. With increases in cloud incidents related to vulnerability scanning, web application attacks and brute force attacks, it is crucial for you to understand the types of threats potentially targeting you on the cloud so you can build a security-in-depth strategy to defend your environment from malicious attacks.

In Alert Logic’s Annual Cloud Security Report 2014, web application attacks, brute force attacks and vulnerability scans were the most pronounced attacks experienced in the Cloud Hosting Provider environments, each impacting over 40% of the cloud hosting base. Brute force attacks have surged, likely due to the increasing presence of “theft worthy” data in the cloud, with vulnerability scans typically coupled with brute force attacks in terms of attack style and process.

Big Data - on VMware?

Overview:

As told by SureSkills Principle Cloud Evangelist, Calvin Riskowitz. Principle-Cloud-Evangelist-Calvin-Riskowitz

Apache Hadoop provides a platform for building distributed systems for massive data storage and analysis using a large cluster of standard x86 based servers. It uses data replication across hosts and racks of hosts to protect against individual disk, host, and even rack failures. A job scheduler can be used to run multiple jobs of different sizes simultaneously, which helps to maintain a high level of resource utilisation. Given the built in reliability and workload consolidation features of Hadoop it might appear there is little need to virtualise it. However, there are several use cases that make virtualisation of this workload compelling:

Saba @Work 2015 conference

SureSkills, a European and North American Partner of Saba sent a team of management, HR and Learning & Development experts to the highly anticipated Saba @Work 2015 conference in Las Vegas last week. SureSkills-and-Saba-partnership

There was a number of highlights and big announcements over the 4 days with the biggest takeaway being the Saba Cloud spring release! Saba Cloud is focused on enabling customers to build leaders at all levels of the organization, and empowering them with the intelligent tools to make it happen. As the economy improves and organizations grow, new leaders need to be brought on or up more rapidly than ever, to help drive the business from all levels. This is encouraging organizations in a race to: attract the right candidates with key leadership qualities, identify and advance hidden leaders internally who are ready for the next step, and measure talent processes vs industry peers to quickly address issues that could result in their attrition.

The Saba Cloud Spring Release delivers powerful new capabilities and enhancements to address this challenge, helping our customers to attract, advance, and empower their leaders - and ultimately build a culture of leadership throughout the organization. While there are many features and enhancements available with this release, below are my top three focused squarely at this challenge.

It’s time for us to reimagine leadership.

Leadership is no longer about command & control, about hierarchy, or status. Rather, leadership is about doing something that has purpose, exerting your influence, achieving mastery, and seeing the direct linkage between your contribution and the success of the business.

Is the end of support for Windows Server 2003 a cause for panic?

As with ‘Y2K’ at the end of the millennium, clear, logical planning is key to guarding against the worst-case scenario.

Windows-Server-2003-End-Is-Ahead

Unless you have been living under a rock or have an impressive gift for auto-filtering what information enters your brain, you will be aware that as of July 15thextended support will no longer be available for Windows Server 2003. Of course, this translates into a seemingly nightmare scenario whereby your IT dept will no longer receive patches or security updates to fix bugs or performance issues, meaning your applications and business will be at risk. Any new threats to your systems won’t be tackled and they will become a security risk as well as a big headache on the compliance front.

Countless blogs and articles have been produced warning of the looming deadline and the huge risk a company will take by not being fully prepared for it. Some companies, like during the Y2K ‘scare’, have tried to take advantage of this by indulging in a little scaremongering, conjuring up all manner of disastrous scenarios in the hope that they can take a sizeable bite out of your IT budget.
